Tickets are now on general sale for the internationally renowned Leeds International Orchestral Season 2014/15. Acclaimed as one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country, this wonderful series features breathtaking programmes, remarkable orchestras and astounding soloists from all corners of the globe.

As part of a packed programme, the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra opens the season on Saturday 4 October with an all-Russian set-list featuring Tchaikovsky’s great Fifth Symphony. From abroad highlights include the St Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Temirkanov (1 Nov), the Trondheim Soloists (14 Feb), the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek (18 April) and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (9 May).

The series features performances from some of the finest British orchestras and their Music Directors, including The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder with Viktoria Mullova performing Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto (11 Oct), the BBC Philharmonic and Juanjo Mena (24 Jan), the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons (21 Mar) and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with Vasily Petrenko (7 Mar).

Later in the season, both first and second prize winners of the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition will also be performing in the city. First Prize winner Federico Colli performs Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto with the Orchestra of Opera North (11 April) and Louis Schwizgebel, Second Prize winner, presents Ravel’s Concerto in G with the BBC Philharmonic (30 May).

The City’s two great choral societies continue to play an important role in the season. Leeds Festival Chorus performs a programme of French choral music including Fauré’s Requiem (22 Nov) and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus presents Orff’s Carmina Burana (14 Mar). Both choirs join forces for Beethoven’s Choral Symphony with the Warsaw Philharmonic (9 May) and for a performance of Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with the BBC Philharmonic to bring the season to a close on Saturday 30 May 2015.

Tickets can be purchased from the City Centre Box Office on 0113 224 3801 or online at www.leedsconcertseason.com.

Background:

Leeds International Concert Season is run by Leeds City Council and is the largest local authority music programme in the UK, programming more than 300 concerts a year in the Leeds area. The highlight of each season is Leeds International Orchestral Season, which sees national and international orchestras visit Leeds Town Hall on Saturday nights.

The Concert Season also includes the UK’s finest brass band series at Morley Town Hall, international chamber music at Leeds College of Music, plus a programme of folk, world and popular music at Leeds Town Hall.

A unique series of sixty lunchtime chamber and organ recitals offers the most extensive programme of free music in Britain and music moves outside in the summer with free bandstand concerts in Leeds parks.
