One of Leeds’ premier tourist attractions will be closing later this month due to refurbishment.
As part of work set to be undertaken at the Arnold and Marjorie Ziff Tropical World in Roundhay Park, the facility will be closed from 6 January 2014 – 2 February 2014, with a planned reopening set for 3 February 2014.
During the shutdown, the existing toilets at Tropical World will be redecorated and electrical improvements made to the facility, which will also be given its annual spring clean to ensure that when reopened, it is looking at its very best for visitors.
This will be followed later in the year by a second phase of work that forms part of an overall £720,000 revamp. Included in phase 2 will be the construction of a new toilet block with changing facilities, electrical and heating improvements, path works and a new conservatory extension to the café which will start later in the year.
Home to animals, including butterflies, birds, fish, reptiles, meerkats, nocturnal monkeys, crocodiles, bearded dragons and bats, a host of improvements have already been made at Tropical World as part of phase 1. These include the development of a new entrance space and children’s party and education zone, along with the introduction of an exciting crocodile closure that allows visitors’ to see at close-hand the three Morelet’s crocodiles housed in the attraction.
Once completed, these improvements will help ensure that Tropical World continues to be a venue which is enjoyed by an estimated 300,000 visitors each year.
Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for the environment said:
"Due to important electrical and refurbishment work being undertaken at Tropical World, this will mean that unfortunately the facility has to close for a month from 6 January.
"Once these improvements are made we are looking forward to welcoming back visitors to Tropical World, in what promises to be a very exciting year as phase 2 of our £720,000 refurbishment programme commences later in 2014.
"Once again, I would like to offer on behalf of the council our thanks to the Ziff family for their extremely generous backing and support to this revamp, which has made our ambitions at Tropical World a reality."
