Teenagers raise funds for baby lifesaving alarm

Issued on behalf of the National Citzenship project team

A group of 16 and 17 year olds have handed over a cheque to the Neo-Natal Unit at Leeds General Infirmary after raising money as part of a citizenship project.

The young people raised £316 by holding a variety of fundraising activities over the summer, including a cake stall and children’s face painting at the BREEZE event at Kirkstall Abbey as well as street collecting in central Leeds.

The funds will buy a new baby lifesaving machine called an ‘Apnoe Alarm’ which will enable the unit to look after to further support babies whom have breathing problems.

The idea was born out of their involvement in the National Citizen Service (NCS) project delivered by Leeds City Council’s youth service.

The national project offers young people aged 16-17yrs the opportunity to meet new people, gain key life skills and do something positive within the community. NCS believes that “we believe in the power of young people to change the world if only given the tools and opportunity…”

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills said:

"The Leeds Light switch-on is a fantastic way to kick off the festive season in style, and it is exciting to see some of the first guests confirmed for this year’s event, which includes former X Factor finalists Same Difference, who will be starring in this year’s panto at the Carriageworks Theatre.

"Now in its 30th year this is an occasion that all the family can enjoy, and it is always brilliant to see such a brilliant crowd gather at Victoria Gardens to play their part in generating such an amazing atmosphere.

"We still have some very special guests to announce for the switch-on, on what promises to be another unforgettable night.”
