Statement on the council’s decision to replace the Lord Mayor’s car

Leeds City Council is proposing to dispose of the two old limos currently being used for the Lord Mayor and replace them with one nearly new vehicle.


The ongoing costs of the two current vehicles are proving to be very high, and on several occasions the vehicles have broken down on the way to civic visits.


The role of Lord Mayor involves acting as the first citizen of Leeds, greeting important visitors from the UK and abroad and representing the city at civic occasions. Leeds is one of the biggest cities in England, and therefore it seems fitting that the Lord Mayor should have a suitable vehicle to support this civic and ceremonial function and uphold the status and reputation of the city.


The new vehicle will be a long wheel based Jaguar saloon. It has been decided that the cost of buying a new coach built limousine, similar to the current car is not cost effective.


Looking at the long term, buying a nearly new car will offer a saving of £12k over a seven year lifespan. The new car will have lower emissions and will allow savings to be made on maintenance, mpg and general running costs.



Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council executive board member for neighbourhoods, planning and support services said:

“The position of Lord Mayor is an important one for the city – the role holder is the first citizen of Leeds and represents the city at a number of events and also welcomes important figures to the city.

“It is important therefore that the Lord Mayor arrives and departs in the appropriate fashion befitting such a title and one that represents the city’s reputation and status at any event.


“However we are fully aware that these are difficult times for everyone and that we need to be saving money, so the decision to replace two cars with one, and not to buy ‘new’, will save us money both in fuel and maintenance costs over the next few years.”



Notes to editors:

The Council currently uses two coach built limousines to support the Lord Mayor and the Civic and Ceremonial functions. They are more than 8 and 9 years old.

The council is currently seeking quotations for a suitable replacement vehicle.
