In January 2012, the council invited stage one applications with a closing date of April 26 2012. The council has now received the following applications:
|Global Gaming Ventures Ltd||Eastgate Quarters, Eastgate, Leeds, LS2||Provisional Statement|
|Grosvenor Casino Ltd||G Casino, Quarry Hill, Leeds, LS2||Provisional Statement|
|Leeds United Football Club Ltd||West Stand Concourse, Elland Road, Leeds, LS11 0ES||Provisional Statement|
|London Clubs Leeds Ltd||The Alea Casino, 3 The Boulevard, Clarence Dock, Leeds, LS10 1P2||Premises Licence|
|Rushbond Plc||Majestic, City Square, Leeds, LS1 2EF||Provisional Statement|
Applicants will now advertise their application in a local newspaper and site notices will be placed at the proposed location. Interested parties and responsible authorities may make representations about the applications until 24 May 2012.
The applications are available to view via the council's Public Access website at http://licensingapplications.leeds.gov.uk or at the offices at St George House, 40 Great George Street, Leeds, LS1.
It is anticipated that stage one applications will be considered at a hearing in July. Successful stage one applicants will be invited to participate in stage two of the application process, whereby the council will determine which application will provide greatest benefit to the city. Stage two is expected to conclude in spring 2013.
As the granting of a casino licence is a statutory process, Leeds City Council will make no comment on any of the applications and the council has no preferred location or applicant.
Notes to editor
Leeds does not have powers to grant a ‘super’ casino licence. This is a term used to refer to a regional style casino and not a large casino licence.
Leeds is only one of eight authorities with powers to grant a large casino licence, which permits 150 gaming machines with a maximum jackpot of £4000 and a gaming area of at least 1000 sqm.
