England’s bid to win the European Championships this summer is expected to be backed by big crowds at Millennium Square in Leeds after it was confirmed every game played by Roy Hodgson’s men in Poland and Ukraine will be shown live on its big screen.
Crowds of up to 8,000 people are expected to flock to Millennium Square to enjoy the big-match atmosphere for every game England play in the tournament as they bid to become European champions.
Leeds City Council has confirmed it will again be staging a specially created outdoor public viewing arena that has proved so successful in previous major football tournaments dating back to 2002.
England’s bid begins with a 5pm kick-off against France on Monday June 11, followed by their other group games against Sweden on Friday June 15 (7.45pm kick off (KO)) and joint hosts Ukraine on Tuesday June 19 (7.45pm KO). Admission will be free, and should England progress to the knockout stages every game they play at that level will also be shown live.
Gates for each match will be open 1 ½ hours before kick-off and fans are advised to arrive early to secure their places as admission will be on a strictly first-come first-served basis until the capacity is reached. No tickets will be issued or required and the outdoor arena will also feature a fully-licensed bar, toilet facilities and specialist catering outlets offering a wide variety of food including a traditional hog roast, authentic Italian pizza and Indian cuisine.
Leeds City Council executive member for Leisure Councillor Adam Ogilvie said:
“Millennium Square has proved itself to be a fantastic venue for watching England on the big screen over the years and I’m sure every game will be packed out again this summer with fans willing the team on to hopefully do the nation proud.
“The big match atmosphere on the square for the England games is unrivalled anywhere in the city and makes it an exciting and unmissable experience for all those attending.”
Aside from England’s games, all other Euro 2012 matches will be shown on the big screen as part of the daily screen schedule with seating and refreshments (subject to availability) provided by neighbouring businesses as part of their normal street café trading operations.
Further event information for all England games will be given on a game-by-game basis, including details of media access requirements.
