Statement on the retirement of Leeds rugby star Jason Robinson

Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Reverend Alan Taylor has made the following statement in response to rugby star Jason Robinson announcing his retirement today:

Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Reverend Alan Taylor said:

“Jason Robinson is without doubt one of the finest sportsmen Leeds has ever produced. His success in rising from humble beginnings to reach the pinnacle of both rugby union and rugby league, winning the Rugby World Cup, captaining England and starring for the British and Irish Lions and Great Britain is a shining example of how talent, determination and hard work can result in extraordinary achievement.

“At a time when sport is at the forefront of everyone’s minds with the London 2012 Olympics only a year away and Leeds bidding to be a host city for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, Jason Robinson is the perfect ambassador for Leeds and the ideal inspiration for young people to encourage them to make the most of their talents. As a city we are immensely proud of Jason and his achievements and wish him all the very best in his retirement.”

Leeds City Council’s school travel team and NHS Leeds joined forces to hold the prize draw for pupils who cycled or scooted to school each day during Bike Week. Pupils were asked to register their names for the prize draw and then winners were drawn out randomly.

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member with responsibility for development said:

“It is great that so many schools got involved in Bike Week, encouraging young people to use a more health form of transport to get to school.

“I hope everyone who started biking or scooting to school, continues to do this into the future.”
