Students from primary and secondary schools in Leeds shared their heated thoughts and understanding on global warming through art as part of a recent competition.

Funded by Europe Direct Leeds, which is part of Leeds Library and Information Service, the competition saw a wide variety of high quality entries, including collages, t-shirts, rap, poems and 3D objects all centred on the idea of global warming, entered into the competition.

Representatives from Europe Direct Leeds, Education Leeds’ Sustainable Schools, Leeds City Council’s Sustainable Development Unit and Leeds Museum and Galleries made up the judging panel.

The two winning schools, Five Lanes Primary School from Wortley, and Benton Park High School from Rawdon each received a digital camera , with the highly commended Hawsworth Church of England School winning £100 worth of book tokens, as well as the eight individual winners who also received book tokens.

Leeds City Council executive member for Leisure Councillor John Procter said:
“The project has been a great success, and the entries were of a very high standard. It is great to see young people sharing their ideas on global warming and presenting it in some very imaginative ways.”

Prize winners and guests were invited to attend the opening of Leeds City Museum’s exhibition ‘A Greener City,’ where their work is currently being displayed.

The ‘Greener City’ exhibition is free and is running through to the end of the year. The free exhibition includes a collection of short films on the big screens in the museum’s central Leeds Arena.
